Welcome to Kongoni community library
Opening Literary Doors to All
KONGONI COMMUNITY LIBRARY is located at Kongoni Ward, Likuyani Sub-county, in Kakamega County.
What is in a name? Kongoni is the name of an antelope called a Hartebeest. This was originally a settlement scheme. The first inhabitants are believed to be cattle farmers and they were driven away by the activities of the foreign settlers.
This place was bushland and the white settlers who lived here had a passion for hunting Kongoni Hartebeest. That is why the place was named that way. The white settlers were later forced to leave after independence and the land was allocated to the local workers of the white settlers. The allocation was in parcels on payment by cooperative style arrangements.
The neighbouring trading centers were not spared from being given the names of wild animals either. Kongoni is in the middle of two trading centers, Nangili(Warthog) and Furfuro(Buffalo). These animals were common in these places.
